I have heard people say, who are very overweight, that losing the weight helped them get off of diabetes medicine, but I don’t know if that is a real cure or not.

Yes, many.
mostly people who have a certain type of diabetes… like the kind a person can get by being pregnant. once the baby is born, the diabetes goes away.
some people will get rid of it by losing weight and eating right.

To the best of my knowlege, the only way that has ever happened is with the transplantation of islet cells from a donor’s pancreas to a site in the recipient’s body – usually on the liver, interestingly enough. There’s a doctor in Fort Worth, Texas, working on it, and it has been done successfully a few times. To date, there’s no way to take a pill or have a non-transplant procedure that will do the job.

I’ve heard stories about people who no longer have it. I have a friend that claims she no longer has it. And of course there are countless so called cures being peddled on the net. But i tend to believe once you have it your stuck with it. You can manage it to the point where you may feel you no longer have it. But every doctor i talk to says its a a life long condition. Besides if someone has been cured don’t you think its would one of the biggest news stories in medicine.

Depends on your definition of “cured”. If that means being able to control type two diabetes without drugs or injections, then, yes… it is being done all the time with diet, exercise, and weight management. I’ve done it myself a few times. If you mean being able to eat like a pig, watch TV all the time, and getting fat (again), then, no… no one has been cured.

I think only death cures it. Once you get it, your are stuck with it. Even if you have it under control with diet and exercise. Anybody that says they are cured must be delusional.

Like someone else mentioned, I also believe that a few people have been cured (or had to deal with much less) by a pancreas transplant.

I don’t know if a cure will ever happen (since the diabetes industry nets over a BILLION dollars each year), but Lee Iacocca is sponsoring research for a cure:

Type 2 can be cured. Type 1 cannot.
